"He smiled understandingly-much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. It faced - or seemed to face - the whole external world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself, and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey."
So it's a rather long quote....Nevertheless, I feel like this passage shows the inner beauty that Gatsby has. It illustrates his underlying characteristic of almost child-like naivete - his sheer desire to please and automatic willingness to see the good in people. This is also illustrated when one his party-goers comments that when she ripped her evening gown, Gatsby replaced it with a new one. If he feels he owes someone something, Gatsby does not hesitate to take responsibility. It would have been nice if he had kept this quality throughout the entirety of the novel...
Casey Brown "Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt to my reaction-Gatsby who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn. If personality is an unbroken series of unsuccessful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life, as if he were related to one of those intricate machines that register earthquakes ten thousand miles away." This quote is my favorite, because it is the first of the little we hear about Gatsby. He remains mysterious at first. This is the only description we are given of Gatsby in the first chapter. The quote offers a description that makes you want to know more about Gatsby, but none is offered just yet. I like the description of Gatsby's personality, and how it is compared to a machine that registers earthquakes. This description was the first thing that caught my attention in the book.
"The eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic-their retinas are one yard high. They look out of no face but, instead, from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles which one pass over a nonexistent nose."
The author puts emphasis on the eyes because the eyes are what's seeing the activities that Tom and Nick are doing. Nick also feels the guilt from him being watch and the possibility of them getting caught. Also, the only other feature that was on the face was the mouth, because the mouth is able to tell about the affair that Tom is having with Myrtle.
"So Tom Buchanan and his girl and I went up together to New York – or not quite together, for Ms. Wilson sat discreetly in another car. Tom deferred that much to the sensibilities of those East Eggers who might be on the train.”
Tom Buchanan is going to New York to be with his mistress, Myrtle for a while. Nick goes with them to meet Myrtle and doesn’t like being in the situation at all. I think Tom makes Myrtle sit on a different train car because he is scared other people will see her. If people see them together they will go back and tell either his wife or her husband. This is my favorite quote because it shows true feelings and how Tom really is. I don’t completely agree with what he does and how he treats Myrtle like that, but I like the fact that there is honesty in the quote.
"Civilization's going to pieces. I've gotten to be a terrible pessimist about things... The idea is if we don't look out the white race will be--will be utterly submerged... It's up to us, who are the dominant race, to watch out or these other races will have control of things."
Nick says this, meaning that in ways minorities are having more say in things than the majority. This is my favorite quote, not because of the meaning but because of the irony in it. This book was written in the 20's. I find it very ironic that the same subjects of controversy were being raised in that decade as they are now. People believe minorities are being granted more and more rights as time goes on. Some don't mind, but as the narrator agrees, some people think this is bad and soon they'll have to much input on things. He claims we must take control before it gets out of control. That's for everyone to have their same opinion. This goes to show that technology and styles can change, but humans' different opinions most likely will not.
"I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool-that's the best thing that a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool"
She says this beacuse she knows if her husband cheats on her she wouldn't want her daughter to know because it would hurt both of them and she doesn't want that for her daughter. If I was Daisy then I would want my daughter to know if her husband was cheating on her because if he did it for awhile then in the end it would not turn out good.
"Im glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool-that's the best thing that a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool."
Daisy is saying that she hopes her daughter doesnt become a fool in any way. She feels she's a fool for letting tom cheat on her with her knowing but does nothing about it, and doesnt want her daughter to become the same fool shes become. She wasnt her daughter to become a better young lady, and even a better woman than she is.
My favorite quote in Chapters 1-3 is:"I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known." (The Great Gatsby, pg. 64) because he is talking to Jordan Baker and he feels he is a very honest person. He is starting to fall for her. He is explaining about what he puts at the end of the letters. Love, Nick.
"whenever you feel like criticizing anyone," he told me, "just remember that all the people In this world haven't had the advantages that you had ".
The quote,is right in the beggining of the book ; and I think its in a good place in the book as well. It shows a good lesson in life that everyone needs to follow by. i can say im not the only one that has been in a spot were they have criticized someone. Maybe it might be on the way they dress, look , talk, or whatever it might be. But the real truth is not everybody has had the advantages that I have had. But then i have to think what might that person be going through in life , and who am I to criticize someone who I don't even know. Thats why I try not to criticize people at all, and not judgea book by a cover.
''Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone,'' he told me, ''just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had.''
The quote is on the first page of Chapter 1, but its a good quote to have at the beginning of the book. This is a good trait for people to follow in life. People can get criticized on a lot of things. I have sat down and criticized a person on their clothes or how they look. When its not right because they could do the same back. Amd people never think about people's feelings anymore. But, everyone life isn't perfect, so people shouldn't criticized others. A lot of people to can judge a person without not knowing them. Now, i try my best not to say anything about a person before knowing them first. So, don't always judge a person.
DeeVah R- "I have been drunk just twice in my life and the second time was that afternoon, so everything that happened has a dim hazy cast over it although until after eight o'clock the apartment was full of cheerful sun." -pg33
I like this quote, because he is not a big drinker. This quote also says he only got drunk twice, which is weird cause I don't know anybody that only been drunk twice. By reading this Nick seem like he doesn't let anybody influence him with a lot of drinking, and druging.
DWOOD---there are many great quotes so far in this novel, however in the opening page one of the first lines really caught my attention, "Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had. This is by far my favorite quote because like nick, my dad as told me adivce like this before. Also this saying can lead you far in life, if you continue judging people than consequently nobody will like you. However, you cant let the part of " nobody has had the advantages that you've had", get to your head, otherwise the saying could have a negative effect on you and make you become cocky
"Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." (Chapter 1)
This is my favorite quote so far because it makes you think about how we perceive people. I would like to think that I don't judge people based on what I see or how they act but we all do. This qoutes just puts it in perspective. People really don't think twice before they pass judgemnet on someone. Most of us forget sometimes to considered the other person in the situation before we judge them. I like how this qoutes reminds us to with hold our criticism. Also it gives us the message that we should think before we critcize because we have no idea what they been through to make them act this way.
Jordan--- "Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone," he told me,"just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." I love this quote because it relates to many people. Alot of people judge someone because of how they look or how they act. When they dont realize what all the other person has been through. This also relates to the peoples experiences that they've had; someone might not be as good at something as you are, but they haven't had the advantages you've had to be good at it.
"Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone," he told me, 'just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had" First page.
This is my favorite quote of this book because this quote applies to me and many other people. Nick's father is essentially saying that he were born privileged. And that he should be thankful for what he has. And for those who aren't as fortunate, don't judge them for what they have to do to survive. The father is also saying that people unlike him have gone through disastrous experiences than he has, so he should be more cautious on how he treats others. I like this because everyone should have this quote said to them becuase in a way it pertains to everyone.
"I've been drunk for about a week now, and I thought it might sober me up to sit in a library."
This is my favorite qoute because it shows how sober nick really is. It shows that nick understands that he is getting a little crazy in NY and that it has changed him. NY has changed nick a lot. Before he went to NY he had only gotten drunk once. Now after being in NY nick has gotten drunk several more times. It shows that nick whants to pull his act together. This is also my favorite qoute because it is very funny.
"The sister, Catherine, was a slender, wordly girl ofabout thirty with a solid sticky bob of red hair and a complexion powdered milky white. Her eyebrows had been plucked and the drawn on again at a more rakish angle but the efforts of nature toward the restoration of the old alignment gave a blurred air to her face."
This is my favorite because she is trying so hard to look good and draw attention to herself that obviously she isnt cute. ;) so i think its funny.
Jake Livengood said "See!" He explained. It went in the ditch." The fact was infinetely astonishing to him--and i recognized first the unusual quality of wonder and then the man-- it was the late patron of gatsby's library. "howed it happen?" He shrugged his shoulders.
I like this quote because its funny and the guy went into a ditch and didnt really know. And he had been drunk for a whole week. so he was drunk for a whole week and some how thought he could drive. The funnyest part is that he didnt even care. thats funny to me.
"Daisy was not a Catholic and I was a little shocked at the elaborateness of the lie"
This is my favorite quote because Tom lies about Daisy being Catholic because he doesn't want to leave Daisy even though he is having an affair with Myrtle. Also he isn't going to leave Daisy for a lower class woman.
"suppose you met somebody just as careless as yourself."
That's my favorite quote because it show's that nick realize's that Jordan Baker is careless so it show's that even when nick is drunk he can still tell a careless person when he see's one but he still like's Jordan
Matt Fisher says... "I've been drunk for about a week now, and i thought it might sober me up to sit in a library"
This is my favorite quote because it shows how out of control Gatsbys parties really are. After he said this he tried to ride in a car that had one of the back wheels missing and he didn't even realize it. I also like it because it's very funny.
Hunter Catlett said... "Daisy! Daisy! Daisy!" shouted Mrs.Wilson."I'll say it whenever I want to! Daisy! Dai-" Making a short deft movement Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his open hand.(pg.41)
This is my favorite quote because even though Tom is cheating on his wife ,Daisy, he takes up for her when others talk about her. But this also means he may be abusive to women and he wants to have control over them.
Its Funny cause Tom is cheating on his wife with a ugly chick. haha.
Thomas Wallace said... "I have been drunk just twice in my life and second time was that afternoon."
I think that he is turning to be a drunk. the life that he is living he cant handle with out being drunk. He siad that he had only been drunk two times so he doesnt drink muck.
"I have been drunk just twice in my life and the second time was that afternoon, so everything that happened has a dim hazy cast over it although until after eight o'clock the apartment was full of cheerful sun."
I like this quote because it shows that he is a responsible person and doesn't drink often. This also shows that he doesn't get easily influenced by other people.
"I hope she’ll be a fool—that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool" The generation that this story took place in often would look down on girls as not as smart or strong as men. They are basically saying that it doesnt matter what happens , she will be dumb just cause she is a girl. Sexism was big back then , but we werent at the time yet were woman were fighting for their rights. -Kimani Shore
"blinded by the glare of the headlights and confused by the incessant groaning of the horns the apparition stood swaying for the moment before he percieved the man in the duster. "wha's matter?" he inquired calmly. "did we run outa gas?"
this is my favorite quote so far because it explains how drunk the two men were when they wrecked the car and makes me think that gatsby is going to get in trouble in the near future. other than that its just hallarious.
"the only crazy i was when i married him. i knew right away i made a mistake. he borrowed somebody's suit to get married in and never even told me about it, and the man came after it one day when he was out."oh is that our suit i said.'this is the first i ever heard about it." but i gave it to him and hen i lay down and cried to beat the band all afternoon.
this is my favorite quote because it shows how Myrtle is a "golddigger" and uses men for their money it shows that she doesn't really love her husband because he doesn't have anything.shes upset that she married him.
"I have been drunk just twice in my life, nd the second time was that afternoon, so everything that happened has a dim hazy cast over it although until after eight o'clock the appartment was full of cherrful sun." I like this qote because it shows how boring his life is , wich is ironic because the story is boring.
Burgie- "She's a Catholic and they don't believe in divorce." Daisy was not a Catholic ant i was a little at the elaborateness of the lie."
Tom told every body that Daisy was Catholic because he doesn't realy want to marry myrtle. he wouldnt leave a high class women for a lower class women. alos he doesnt want to leave his daughter.
"Some time toward midnight Tom Buchanan and Mrs. Wilson stood face to face discussing in impassioned voices whether Mrs. Wilson had any right to mention Daisy's name" this show that Tom still cares about Daisy
"'Wha's matter?' he inquired calmly. 'Did we run outa gas?' 'Look!' Half a dozen fingers pointed at the amputated wheel--he stared at it for a moment and then looked upward as though he suspected that it had dropped from the sky. 'It came off,' someone explained. Hhe nodded. 'At first I din' notice we'd stopped.' A pause. Then taking a long breath and straightening his shoulders he remarked in a determined voice: 'Wonder'ff tell me where there's a gas'line station?' At least a dozen men, some of them little better off than he was, explained to him that wheel and car were no longer joined by any physical bond. 'Back out,' he suggested after a moment. 'Put her in reverse.'"
Okay, it's more of a passage than a single quote. It's my favorite quote for two reasons: it's funny, and it shows how drunk some people get at Gatsby's parties. Any sober person would realize what happened.
Hope payne My favorite quote from chapters 1 through 3 is, "whenever you feel like criticizing anyone," he told me, "just remember that all the people In this world haven't had the advantages that you had "(fitgerald pg 6).
I can relate to this qoute in alot of diffrent ways. My grandfather and my father always use to tell me you can not criticize till you have been in their shoes. Also in todays society not everyone can say something about someone till it has happens to them. I would also have to say that I have to look at life in this perspective all the time. Even though you may think you have a good life so can the other person. You dont need to criticize them for things that they are doing.
"Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." pg.5
This is my favorite quote so far because its something that people should remember in real life. Not everyone is raised the way you were therefore you have no right to judge others or criticize others. If im at a disadvantage, i dont like it when others criticize me.
Denis...My favorite quote from chapter 1-3 says, "Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone," he told me,"just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."(Page 5). I feel that this quote talks to every person in one way or another. Not everyone in this world has a perfect life, but some people do have more than others. It says that people should respect where less fortunate people come from and give them their privacy by not judging. In other words people who criticize, because of where someone comes from they should first get to know the person and where they came from. Not all people are alike and that's maybe why Nick decided to actually meet Gatsby instead of just judging him based on what other people said about him.
D ringle--> "I have been drunk just twice in my life and the second time was that afternoon, so everything that happened has a dim hazy cast over it although until after eight o'clock the apartment was full of cheerful sun."
I like this quote because he gets drunk in the middle of the day. Its funny because hes only drunk twice and both times he got wasted. If hes gonna do something hes gonna do it to the fullest.
"He smiled understandingly-much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in life. "I have been drunk just twice in my life and the second time was that afternoon,"
ReplyDeleteThis was my favorite quote because I feel maybe he was only drunk twice but those times have lasted year at a time.
"I hope she’ll be a fool—that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool"
ReplyDeleteThe generation that this story took place in often would look down on girls as not as smart or strong as men. They are basically saying that it doesnt matter what happens , she will be dumb just cause she is a girl. Sexism was big back then , but we werent at the time yet were woman were fighting for their rights.

ReplyDelete"blinded by the glare of the headlights and confused by the incessant groaning of the horns the apparition stood swaying for the moment before he percieved the man in the duster.
ReplyDeletethis is my favorite quote because it shows how Myrtle is a "golddigger" and uses men for their money it shows that she doesn't really love her husband because he doesn't have anything.shes upset that she married him.
"I have been drunk just twice in my life, nd the second time was that afternoon, so everything that happened has a dim hazy cast over it although until after eight o'clock the appartment was full of cherrful sun." I like this qote because it shows how boring his life is , wich is ironic because the story is boring.

ReplyDelete"She's a Catholic and they don't believe in divorce."
Daisy was not a Catholic ant i was a little at the elaborateness of the lie."
ReplyDelete"'Wha's matter?' he inquired calmly. 'Did we run outa gas?'
ReplyDelete'Look!'
Half a dozen fingers pointed at the amputated wheel--he stared at it for a moment and then looked upward as though he suspected that it had dropped from the sky.
'It came off,' someone explained.
Hhe nodded.
'At first I din' notice we'd stopped.'
A pause. Then taking a long breath and straightening his shoulders he remarked in a determined voice:
'Wonder'ff tell me where there's a gas'line station?'
At least a dozen men, some of them little better off than he was, explained to him that wheel and car were no longer joined by any physical bond.
'Back out,' he suggested after a moment. 'Put her in reverse.'"
Okay, it's more of a passage than a single quote. It's my favorite quote for two reasons: it's funny, and it shows how drunk some people get at Gatsby's parties. Any sober person would realize what happened.
REDMAN- "at first i din' notice we'd stopped"
ReplyDeletethis shows that the person that was driving the car was drunk and stupid
HICKS- ''Whas matter'' he inquired calmly. ''Did we run outta gas?'' this quote shows that Owl Eyes is a moron and a drunk. its funny. hoss

ReplyDeleteMy favorite quote from chapters 1 through 3 is, "whenever you feel like criticizing anyone," he told me,
"just remember that all the people In this world haven't had the advantages that you had "(fitgerald pg 6).
ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite quote so far because its something that people should remember in real life.
ReplyDeleteD ringle--> "I have been drunk just twice in my life and the second time was that afternoon, so everything that happened has a dim hazy cast over it although until after eight o'clock the apartment was full of cheerful sun."
ReplyDeleteI like this quote because he gets drunk in the middle of the day. Its funny because hes only drunk twice and both times he got wasted. If hes gonna do something hes gonna do it to the fullest.
