  1. -DeeVah R- Nick is innocent and moral. Nick seems comfortable and uncomfortable in chapt.two. "She suddenly at me and everyone looked at me accusingly. I tried show by my expression that I had played no part in her past"-pg39. This quote explains how he felt uncomfortable about Myrtle comment.

Tom does not want to divorce Daisy for Myrtle, because Myrtle isn't rich, she basically is low class. Also Daisy has a baby girl by Tom. Tom does not want to have a messed up life, basically he could be stucked with the baby if he divorce Daisy.

  2. I feel like Nick is innocent because he doesn't do much that draws attention to him. He stays back and in a sense, watches the world pass by. "Every one suspects himself of at least one of the cardinal virtues, and this is mine: I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known."-page59 This quote says that he hasn't met a lot of people as innocent as him.
In chapter 2, I felt like Nick was very uncomfortable. Who wouldn't? Meeting your 2nd cousins husbands mistress? That right there is not something you'd be comfortable with.

I think that the reason Tom won't divorce Daisy is because he truly does love her. Plus Myrtle isn't rich and Daisy is, and back then, being wealthy was everything.

  3. I feel Nick is inocent. He is very honest about , what he says and does. He really puts the truth to anything , and dosent " beat around the bush ". A quote I would put in as well as somone else has - pg .59 He hasn't met alot of people as honest as him .

Tom hasn't divorce Daisy , because he is trying to " have his cake , and eat it too".

  4. I think Nick is innocent because he's very calm and collected. He keeps to himself and doesn't worry or do any thing to upset other people. In Chapter 2, I feel Nick is very uncomfortable about the situation. He seems like he doesn't know whats really going on, and if he does he doesn't know how to fix it. He seems its' appropriate to be kind and meet his cousin, Daisy's, mistress. He feels very uncomfortable and out of place.
I think the reason Tom doesn't divorce Daisy is because he doesn't want his reputation go down the drain, if he divorces a wealthy a=and popular woman, for a poor in-come woman. I think he still loves Daisy for the child they conceived together but he doesn't love her enough to stay with her. But he feels he has to for him to stay the state he is in now.

  5. i feel nick is innocent because he doesnt judge people which is the way his father brought him up. " whenever you feel like criticizing someone; just remember that all the people in this world havent had the advantages that youve had"- page 5. i felt nick was very uncomfortable when he met his cousins mistress.

I also feel that nick is innocent. He doesnt really show much action or say much to prove him as anything more than innocent. Nick feels that he's never met anyone as innocent as him, as he said on page 59 (lynley's quote) and in chapter 2 nick is very uncomfortable and i feel he's also lost he doesnt know how to feel, what do or what to even say about meeting tom's mistress. Tom doesnt divorce Daisy because he loves her, but he likes myrtle. Daisy's rich and myrtle isnt, he's choosing the one he loves over the one he likes but doesnt know who to choose so he's being with both of them. (cheating on Daisy)

  7. I think that Nick is both innocent, and niave. At the beginning of the story he says that he was taught not to judge people, and hold back his feelings about them, but he is really in his own way judging them without saying much.

I think that Nick is very uncomfortable with the situations he is being up into. Although he does not try to get out of them, he visiable shows his akwardness with meetin Tom's lover, and with meeting McKees and hearing their conversations. "...I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known." -pg. 59. This quote shows that he obviously shows his dislike and judgment for the people he is being around, and compares them to himself and how they are not as innocent as him.

I think that Tom does not divorce Daisy because of society, and his true feelins. Society back in the 20s was all about the perfect family, and showing how happy you were. If Tom were to show his unhappieness with his first wife, then he would be looked down upon. Another reason that Tom does not divorce her is because he truly loves her. He has no feelings for Myrtle at all. All he feels for her is that she is something he can use at any time he wishes with no strings attached.

The dust in the story I think relates to the Valley of Ashes. Because the valley of ashes symbolizes no hope, and not moving up in status, I think this means the people who are grey with the dust of the ash are pictured to be someone with no hope for the rest of their life, and someone who has given up.

  8. Justin Woodfolk...
Nick is innocent and naive. Nick seems like he doesnt get out much. He is so oblivious most of the time, unaware of what he should do. He handles certain situations in unusual ways. on page 20, when he finds out that Tom is being unfaithful to Daisy, this what he would do, "my own instinct was to telephone iimmediately for the police."

The reaso Tom doesnt divorce Daisy for Myrtle becuase he still loves her. Eventhough he trets her bad, in his heart he still cares for her. Daisy is somewhat at the same social class as Tom. On the other hand, Myrtle is in a much lower class than Tom and Daisy. Tom has a reputation he has to keep, so divorcing Daisy for Myrtle wouldn't look good on people's eyes in the 1920.

  10. DWOOD---I think tom is an innocent and moral guy. He never is bragging about his money or anything he has accomplished and he has listened to the advice of his father about not judging people. Nick obvioulsy feels uncomfortable and scared at times,"I'm scared of him. I'd hate to have him get anything on me", which he proclaims about jay gatsby. Earlier he is going with a man who is cheating on his cousin. Nick has every right to feel uncomfortable, and on top of that he has to hang out with another couple that he has never met before.

Tom is a rich guy who has a decent public status and he wouldn't want to ruin this status by getting a divorce and marrying someone that is poor. Also, if Tom married Daisy, than obviously he had some intrest in her, so he probably still loves her

  11. tom wont divorce daisy for myrtle because myrtle isnt wealthy and daisy is. so back then money married money. i think the dust represents the ashes ad the ashes represent society and how its slowly burning.

  12. I feel as though Nick is both innocent and naive. This is because in chapter two Nick, goes to the city with Tom and when they get to the city Tom forces him off at stop that ends up being George Wilson’s garage. Nick innocence is shown yet again when Tom takes Mrytle to the apartment he rents along with Mryle’s cousin Catherine. When they get the apartment the four of them have party of sorts, at this “party,” Nick gets drunk for the second time in his life which even furthers his innocence. This is shown when Nick says “The bottle of whiskey-the second one- was now In constant demand by all present, expecting Catherine who “felt just as good on nothing at all.” Pg.39
I think that Tom would rather not divorce Daisy because Daisy is high up on the social latter and at the time in society social stature was very important. I also think that he would rather not marry Mrytle is because as much as he says he loves Mrytle and as much as Mrytle loves him. I don’t think Tom actually cares for Mrytle in a lovin way and really uses her just as a booty call.

  13. I think Nick is innocent because he seems to stay to himself, and he doesnt bother other people.I also think Tom doesnt want to divorce Dasiy because he still loves her, even though he is cheating on her. He also doesnt want to ruin his good imagine in this small town. I think Nick was in a akward situation meeting his counsin's mistress, I dont think he knew how to react when meeting her.

  14. Nick is innocent, but worldly at the same time. For example when he's on his way to New York he finds it odd that Tom is having an affair. Nick though, does the same things everyone else does, for example, when he gets drunk for the second time. Nick is also moral, but giving him the characteristic of innocence, is to also give him the characteristic of being naive. In chapter one, Nick states his Dad gives him advice, and he uses it in every day life. At the end of chapter three, he states "I am one of the few honest people i have ever known,". These different situations examplify how he's moral. He's naive in the way when he views people he judges them by whether or not they look nice, he doesn't so much actually get to know them.

  15. I think Nick is innocent because he doesn't give off all of his personality. He doesnt give off many interesting facts about himself, and he stays to himself in the story. I feel that he doesn't handle stuff the right way; its like he is scared at times.''I'm p-paralyzed with happiness.'' But, it feels like he is holding pain inside of him, and thats not good. He is a really nice person and honest. I believe Tom won't leave Daisy because he still have feelings for her and daisy is wealthy. So, what guy would leave a wealthy girl? Even though Tom is cheating on Daisy with myrtle. Then, Nick finds out who his cousin mistress is; which he probably didn't know what to say or think.

  17. I think Nick is innocent and moral because he is nice to everyone around him no matter if he agrees with their decisions or not. Including Tom's decision to cheat on his wife/ Nick's second cousin. Although, it does seem that he is very aware that he is kind to others, but doesn't try to enforce that as his one and only personal trait. When involved with Tom's scandal, he is very nervous and wants to get out of the situation as quickly and kindly as possible without hurting Tom and Myrtle's feelings when he politely says, "Well I'd like to but---" (pg 32)in response to being invited up to Myrtle's sister's house.

Tom doesn't want to divorce Daisy for Myrtle because deep down inside him, he still loves Daisy. Financially, Daisy wouldn't be able to live a happy life style without him. Also, they had a child together, and he wants the child to be able to live a perfect, happy life.

  18. I believe Nick is innocent and moral. He has a hard time grasping selfishness because of the morals his father instilled in him at a young age. This is evident when Nick is in Tom's apartment with Myrtle and he picks up a book about someone who is self-centered, and he fails to understand it. He says "either it was terrible stuff or the whiskey distorted things because it didn't make any sense to me."

Tom does not divorce Daisy because he truly does love Daisy. He cares deeply for her, but often gets lost in his worldliness and possessions. If Tom did not care about her, he wouldn't be so protective of Daisy when he thought she was having an affair.

  19. I believe that Nick is innocent and naive. He mostly follows what others tell him to do and doesn't seem to voice his own opinion about anything. In chapter one, he says he knows all about the world's troubles, but I still believe he is innocent. He may be book smart, but he doesn't know how to handle situations and doesn't really have much of an opinion about anything thus far in the book.
Throughout Chapter two, he follows Tom to see his mistress and to hang out with her. His own cousin is Daisy, so you would think that he would be angry with Tom for cheating on her. He still follows though. Catherine, Myrtle's sister, talks about Daisy saying, "It's really his wife that's keeping them apart. She's a catholic and they don't believe in divorce." Nick knows this is a lie, but still does nothing about it. He listens to them talk about his cousin and the whole situation, and watches it without doing anything. I don't think he is comfortable in any of these situations, but he still never voices an opinion or shows any real emotion about anything.
I think Tom doesn't divorce Daisy, because of the fact that Myrtle is of such a lower class. He knows what kind of scandal it would cause, and doesn't want all the drama in his life. He also doesn't want to be known for marrying someone "beneath" him.

I believe Nich is innocent and naive. Nick is innocent because he has done nothing wrong. Nobody can accuse him of doing anything wrong. He doesnt really say much and keeps things to him slef. On Page 59 Nick states that he has never met anybody more innocent than him. What he says is straight foward and simple. He is calm and it states in the book that he was tought to always be kind to people and treat them with respect. Nick is also naive. Nick at times seems a litle slow and confused. He gives us the impression that he doesn't get outside much in society.
Nick acts very unfomfortable when chapter two starts. He gives us the sense that he doesnt really understand whants going on. He acts akward.
Tom doesnt divorce daisy for myrtle because of many reasons. First off the social classes were different. Daisy is rich and myrtle is poor. In the 20s money was very important and whoever had the most money lived a happy life. Tom whanted money so daisy was toms best bet. Also, divorces were hard to erange in the 20s.

  21. I think Nick is pretty innocent for the most part. Usually when he is put in situations when he doesn’t want to be there, he kind of clams up and doesn’t say much. He is somewhat of a shy person, and doesn’t do new things too well. Like the situation with Tom and Myrtle, and being there with them together, he knew it was wrong and he didn’t like it at all. I do believe he is somewhat naïve with some things, he thinks everyone is good and he really doesn’t look into some things like he should.
I don’t think Tom will divorce Daisy for Myrtle because he knows it will hurt her financially. He knows that if he leaves her, she will be nothing, and have nothing. Back then, women had their men and they depended on them for almost everything. I do think he loves her, but I also think he loves Myrtle. It is a hard decision for him to make, and I think the smartest one he could make is to stay with Daisy because they have so much to give each other and they love each other.

  22. I feel that Nick is innocent because when he goes to Gatsby's party he really doesn't know what to do and he seems kind of lost and stays with Jordan Baker the whole time. He doesn't really know how to act when he gets in awkward situations. Also, Tom doesn't want to divorce Dasiy because he knows he will hurt her and it will hurt him too. He also knows that it will hurt him finatually because Mrytle doesn't have a lot of money and Dasiy kind of does.

  23. I think that nick is innocent. However,he is obviously not a honest person. He's a hypocrite. He is calling jordan dishonest when really he's dishonest and a liar for saying that he loves her when he doesnt. "...and for a moment i thought i loved her...I'd been writing her letters once a week and signing them 'love, Nick'..."

I feel that Nick Carroway is both moral and naive. He acts like he is doing well and that things are going good. He acts that way so that people would like him and think that he is a good guy in all the things he does. I also feel that he will get worse as the book goes on. On the inside Nick really loves Daisey and things will not be good after he brakes things up the Daisey to be with Myrtle. Also they had a thing against being divorced.

  26. I think Nick is moral because throughout the book so far he seemed to show that he had a moral code. Like in the begining of the book he says he trys not judge people or how he says that he feels like the eyes of Doctor T.J. Ecckleburg is judging everything he does. A person who's not moral doesn't really think about the consequences of what they're doing. A person who is moral questions if they're doing the right thing. By Nick making that comment about Doctor T.J Eckleburg juding eyes suggest that he has a moral conscious. This makes him kind of want to do the right but he doesn't always get there sometimes.
Nick seems very uncomfortable in these various situations he is put in because when people try to put him in these situations he trys to get out of them but the people he is around persuades him to do it anyway. If he was comfortable we wouldn't be trying to get out of the situations like when Nick was with Tom and Mrtyle. This quotes shows how Nick was trying to get out of going to a party at an apartment. Nick said, "Hold on, I have to leave you here." "No you don't," interposed Tom quickly. "Mrtyle will be hurt if you don't come up to the apartment. Won't you, Mrtyle?" "Come On," she urged. "I'll telephone my sister Catherine. She said to be very beautiful by people who ought to know." "Well, I'd like to, but-." This quote shows how he was trying to get out of the situation but Tom and Mrtyle ended up forcing him into going to the party at the apartment anyway.
Tom feels like he is stuck in a marriage and he doesn't know how to get out of it. He has been with Daisy for a long time, they have a kid together and when you've known someone for that long it's hard to completely change you life upside down. Also I feel like he doesn't want Daisy to be with anyone else. It's like he is the only one who can have her and he is not willing to let her go. No matter how much he loves Mrytle he is never going to let Daisy go. That's because keeping Daisy in his grasp is more important to him than his love for Mrtyle. That's why he's probably never going to leave his wife
