What is the overarching theme in "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock"? How exactly do we know this? (word choice, repetition, etc...) How does this compare to the overarching theme thus far in
The Great Gatsby, and what is the overarching theme in
The Great Gatsby?
The overall theme of The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is confusion and lonliness. I know this after reviewing it 100 million times in class but also, in the poem, T.S. Eliot repeats over and over again, "Do I dare?". Prufrock is very indecisive. The theme of The Love Song relates to the theme of The Great Gatsby because the theme of the story is Lonliness. I know this because we also reviewed it a million times in class, but also in the book, Gatsby is lonley and has parties just to feel less lonley. A specific example, was at the party after they play that song, Nick sees Gatsby overlooking the party and smiling. When people are around, he feels slightly less lonley.
ReplyDeleteActually, while Gatsby does enjoy being alone, the performance of Tostoff's composition on page 54 during Gatsby's approving glance around the crowd indicates not lonliness but Gatsby's role as the conductor of the party.

ReplyDeleteThe theme in The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is loneliness, death, confussion and depression. The authur uses alot of repition of many words like, that is not what I meant and he does not know what he is doing when he states how shall I be persumed. The theme of The Great Gatsby is also loneliness. When Nick goes to the party he is very anti-social. He does not get out and do alot of things his love life is very out there and does not like to express how he feels.
The theme of the poem is loneiness and dispare. The thought of getting older and soon to face death. " But though i have wept and fasted, wept and prayed though i have seen my head( grown slighty bald) brought in upon a platter" (Eliot 81-83)
ReplyDeleteDWOOD---In my opinion a major theme in the great gatsby and the love song of J. Alfred Prufrock is the shallowness or the large egos of the upper class. In the great gatsby the city is split into two sections the west egg and the east egg. One of them is very rich and one is very poor, however, some of the people in the rich side are very cocky. Tom who lives in the rich east egg has all the money he can want and a loving wife. This money seems to go to his head though because he is extremely rude and arrogant, he cheats on his wife, and has a huge ego. Tom is so arrogant that he broke the girls nose who he is cheating on his wife with.
ReplyDeleteLike i said, in the poem there is also a theme of egotistical behavior of the upper class. It says that women come and go talking of Michelangelo. These women dont really know what they are talking about, they are being fake and simply trying to act proper and rich. Also this alfred prufrock buys all these fancy clothes to try to show off money and his stature, but he spends so much money on clothes that his legs are thin becuase he dosent even have money to pay for food.
The overall theme of The Love Song of j. Alfred Prufrock is confusion and lonliess. This is the theme because he repeats "Do I dare" over and over again. Also in The Great Gatsby the reoccurring theme is lonliness. This is the reoccurring theme because he throws parties so he won't feel so lonely. And one time Nick saw him in he conner over-looking the crowd because he didn't really know anyone that was at his party.
ReplyDeleteThe theme of the poem is loniness and not being able to find yourself. In the poem, the author repeats himself a lot and says “Do I dare.” The poem shows that the main character has a hard time finding who he really is and figuring out wat to do with his life. The Great Gatsby has a theme of somewhat the same thing. The narrator, Nick Carraway is having a ard time figuring out his life and what he wants to do. He is lonley because he cant seem to find love and he really doesn’t have many friends.
ReplyDeleteThe theme for "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" is similar in a way to that of the theme in "The Great Gatsby." Loneliness, indecision, and pessimism are all evident in T.S. Eliot's dramatic monologue. An example of this is when the narrator says, "...that is not what i meant at all..."
ReplyDeleteIn "The Great Gatsby," Nick demonstrates indecision in his multiple and unfulfilled relationships. He is also pessimistic; he even says, "Civilization's going to pieces. I've gotten to be a terrible pessimist about things..." Gatsby is lonely and he does not know how to express his loneliness in words. This is evident in how much Gatsby clings to Nick as his companion and "old sport."
The theme of The Love Song and The Great Gatsby is loneliness. In the Love Song he says he doesn't want to disturb the universe. He probably feels like he is a burden to the world. All he wants to do is fit in. On the other hand, Nick in The Great Gatsby feels lonely in a way. He hasn't actually been in "love" with anyone.
ReplyDeleteI think a theme that would describe the poem , would be desolation. We know this due to the fact , in his poem he writes about being by himself .This compares to the theme of our book , because Gatspy is truly desolate as well . Even though he trys to feel the void .
ReplyDeleteThe overall theme of the poem is loneliness. He talks about everyone leaving by repeating "the women come and go." He watches everyone around him come and go in his loneliness. He also talks about himself saying, "Do I dare disturb the universe?" Which means he thinks his own presence is disturbing the world. This shows his loneliness as well. The word choice as well is pitiful.
ReplyDeleteThe theme of The Great Gatsby is also loneliness. Gatsby himself is lonely, which is why he throws many parties. He tries to buy everyone's friendship. He overlooks his parties and sees all the people having fun, and it makes him feel less lonely. This is why there is always a crazy party at Gatsby's house. The people who go to the parties take advantage of him, but he doesn't seem to mind. It cures his loneliness for a little bit.
The overall theme in the love song is a man that is lonely and all ways points out the negative. Compared to the great gatsby they sort of connect because of the factor of loneliness. Nick is also alone and has never loved anyone.

The theme in ''The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock'' is confussion, and depression. The author uses repetition in the story. In ''The Great Gatsby'' and ''The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufock'' compares with loneliness. In ''The Great Gatsby'' the theme is loneliness.
ReplyDeletethe overarching theme is loneliness. we know this because the narrator doesnt love anybody. its in comparison because gatsby is also a lonely man. the theme in the great gatsby is also loneliness
ReplyDeleteThe main theme in The Love Song of J. Alfred Frufrock is Frufrock trying to find his own identity and why he even exists in this world. We know this because he remarks, "I should have been a pair of ragged claws/ Scuttling across the silent seas." (pg 718) The main theme in The Great Gatsby is Gatsby trying to find a reason to live on this earth, and Nick is trying to connect with the people around him. These two stories compare because the main characters in the two stories are both trying to find their identities in a grey city with people that they just can't quite connect to because of their differences in life styles.
ReplyDeleteThe theme in the poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is depression and loneliness, and death. The author repeats a lot of the same meaning. The theme in the Great Gatsby is also depression and loneliness. For example when Nick goes to the party Nick only talks to Jordan and he stays with her the whole night.

ReplyDeleteIn the book "The Great Gastby" the theme is loneliness. Nick shows us how Gastby talks to no one at his own party. We find out how Gastby buy a strange woman a new three hundred dollar dressing . Which tells us he is try to but friends.
The main theme in "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," would be indecision. We know this because, there are multiple lines in the poem devoted to how he can not make a decision, or about he really just isn't sure what to do about different situations. This is especially shown in line 38, when he asks " To wonder, Do I dare? and, Do I dare Time to turn back and descend the stair," This shows his lack of decision making skills because, he honestly has no idea what to do in this situation about, and doesn't even know if he should ask because he is so worried about what the repercussions from his questions.
ReplyDeleteThis compares to the theme of loneliness in "The Great Gatsby," because since Gatsby is so lonely and unsure of himself, he is less likely to make decisions because he is so worried about what others will think. What others think worries him so much because since he is so lonely he doesn't want the people that do hang out with to stop doing so just because he says the wrong thing.
The theme of the poem " The love song J. Alfred Prufrock" by T.S Eliot is lonelyness and death. It gives us ideas that give us a sense of who he is. "For the yellow smoke that slides along the street, rubbing its back upon the window pains...."(T.S ELiot 24-25) Yellow smoke to me means death and darkness in the city. He uses dramaic monologue and allusions to show that he is lonely and that the story is dark. In the book "The Great Gatsby" the theme is also lonelyness. This is very similiar to T.S Eliots book. The overarcging theme in the great gatsby is lonelyness and dispair.
ReplyDeleteThe main theme for "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" is simmaler to "The Great Gatsby" in that both of the main characters have some sort of depression and confusion. You can tell that Alfred Prufrock is depressed and confused when he says "To wonder 'Do i dare' and 'Do I dare?'". You can tell that gatsby is depressed and confused when he says "
ReplyDelete"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prurock" has a an underlining theme of loniless, depression and uncertainty. He shows this by repetition of things like "Do I Dare". In the poem he keeps skiping around to different thoughts, ideas or questions of life. In the book he says, "Do I dare disturb the universe" this shows his uncertainty in life. He's very unsure of where to go next. The poem relates to The Great Gatsby by having the reoccuring theme of lonilness. In the Gatsby it said, "But no one swooned backward on Gatsby and no French bob touched Gatby's shoulder and no singing quarters were formed with Gatsby head for link". This showed how lonely Gatsby was because when everyone esle was with someone Gatsby was just standing alone. This goes back to the poem showing the parallel between Gatsby and Prufrock.
ReplyDeleteDenis...The theme of "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufock" and the "Great Gatsby" is loneliness. T.S. Eliot makes the reader feel what he does when he goes through his series of events. In "The Great Gatsby" Nick is lonely, because he's doesn't have anyone important in his life. Therefore, the main theme in both stories is loneliness, because the characters feel lonely.
ReplyDeleteEtoine S...---->>>> theme of the poem was lonelyness but it was knda confusin.. like its gve a flling ov realism.. openned himself to the reader... the great gatsby was very similar and the narrator oppened his ideas and thoughts to the reader as wll
ReplyDeleteIn, "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," has many themes, one of them being loneliness. He expresses through his repitition in the questions he inquires through out the poem. Such as, Do I dare, and, "Do I care disturb the universe?" By this He is asking himself if its worth it to go out into the world and be a part of it, when everyone is fine the way they are. In, "The Great Gatsby," Nick gives an example of a situation where Gatsby came across as lonely also. Nick went to one of his parties and when all the couples were dancing, Gatsby was not, he had nobody to dance with. Which is an odd thought, considering Gatsby seems to be very well known, but come to find out it's only for his great amounts of money. Both themes in these writing pieces, are loneliness.
ReplyDeleteDeeVah Ragland- "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock", and The Great Gatsby theme is mostly loneliness. By this, in "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" he express himself by saying he don't want to disturb the universe, because he think he is worthless to the world. In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby is a lonely person by throwing party's at his house, and the people he like the most he will take them out and spend money on them. Basically he is buying people / Nick friendship.
ReplyDeleteD ringen-->In "The love song of J. Prufrock" and "the Great gatsby" kind of share the same theme. In both they are in search of love because of how lonely they are.In the poem the man was in search of relationships because he was lonely. In the great gatsby you also see the search for new love because of unhappines and loneliness.
